The
premature baby often arrives without warning, and parents are
thrown into a terrifying period of uncertainty, into a world of terminology, procedures and medical
equipment that they they hardly knew existed.
The
premature baby is
fighting a battle for life that grips you for every minute of each hour of every day...
possibly for several extremely traumatic weeks or
months.

The
first two weeks are the most stressful period for the parent as
they get to know the NICU, the medical terms, equipment, and their
preemie.
The
first few weeks are usually critical for the smaller preemie, and
parents watch, holding their breaths, while their baby hovers
between life and death...one foot in heaven and one on
earth. Nothing else matters at this time, your preemie
becomes the first priority in the world, everything else ceases to
exist. Everyday worries seem trivial in comparison to what
you and your preemie are going through. The parent is filled
with all sorts of emotions, fear of losing their baby, possible
guilt over the baby being born too soon, and the anxiety coupled
with stress is an enormous pressure.
Preemies for Africa™ is concerned about you the parent
of a premature baby during this time. Nothing will ever completely ease your fears while your baby is
in a critical condition but knowing what to expect, speaking with
other parents who have experienced NICU can make a huge
difference.
Preemies for Africa™ support parents while NICU, when
taking baby home, and during the growing up years. Our first group
of preemies are now going to school, so the moms on our groups have
traveled the wrote quite extensively by now.

Only those who
have been through all the trauma of NICU and caring for a
premature baby at home, are able to identify with
you, can understand what you are going through and offer support
when you need it most.
